World Radiology Day Celebrations 2021

World Radiology Day Celebrations 2021

November 8th is being celebrated as “World Radiology Day” which marks the beginning of journey of X-rays as they were discovered on this day by Sir Wilhem Conrad Roentgen on this day in 1895, Professor Roentgen was working with cathode rays using evacuated glass bulbs. He noted that when a current passed across the bulb a barium platinocyanide screen fluoresced and further more he noted the effect of phenomenon on photographic plate. He termed this discovery “X-ray”, for which he was awarded with Nobel prize in physics in 1901.Roentgen is considered as the father of diagnostic radiology.

Radiology has come some far in 126 years with incredible advancements, Radiographers worldwide used this day and the days around the date to promote radiography as a career, as a vital contribution to modern healthcare and as a chance to increase public awareness of diagnostic imaging and therapy.

On this momentous occasion we the faculty, post graduate students and the radiology technicians at the department of Oral medicine and Radiology, Raja Rajeshwari Dental College and Hospital celebrated this day with this year’s theme of ‘INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY’. To commemorate the occasion we together organised and participated in RADIOLOGY WEEK titled “256 shades of gray-spot radio & reply”. From 15.11.21- 18.11.21 had radiology interpretation week& Oral Radiology quiz titled “ quiz o mania” related to various topics in oral radiology which was a great learning experience. Clinical Meet – Periodontology

Clinical Meet – Periodontology

TITLE: SCULPTING THE PERIODONTAL TISSUES: A BOON TO DENTISTRY
DATE: 29.11.2021
PRESENTED BY: Dr Alina Pauly, Dr Sharika Gopinath, Dr Asha V, Dr Shanmugapriya P A, Dr G Poojitha Reddy and Dr Nimmi Janardhanan

The primary goal of periodontal therapy is the regeneration of periodontal supporting tissues that have been lost as a consequence of periodontitis. The complete and predictable restoration of the periodontium following trauma or infection remains a critical objective of periodontal therapy. Initially periodontal therapy concentrated on scaling and root planing. In time, periodontal therapy evolved to access flap operations and it further paved way for regeneration of soft and hard tissues using different form of regenerative materials and surgical techniques. In recent years, there is a paradigm shift from synthetic local drug delivery agents to natural products with antibiotic properties to contain periodontitis in the early stage, as prevention is always better than cure. We are hence employing local drug delivery agents sourced from natural products. These natural local drug deliveries have been used in patients in our department and are currently under trial awaiting long term results.

The aim of the session was to provide an insight into periodontal tissue regeneration and its potential to improve the treatment outcomes of all dental procedures.

Cortico-Basal Implantology: Clinical concepts and applications

Cortico-Basal Implantology: Clinical concepts and applications

Speaker: Dr. Shivaprasad B.M

Basal implantology also known as bicortical implantology or just cortical implantology is a modern implantology system which utilizes the basal cortical portion of the jaw bones for retention of the dental implants. Basal bone is defined as the osseous tissue of the mandible and maxilla underlying the alveolar processes. It is relatively fixed and unchangeable framework of the mandible and maxilla. Using the basal bone, now implants can be placed in region where traditional implants would not be possible. The basal bone is always present throughout life as it is very strong and forms the stress bearing part of our skeleton. Dental implants when placed in this bone can also be loaded with teeth immediately. Basal /cortical implants is a viable option for restoring atrophied jaws as they do not require extensive augmentation and allow for immediate loading. Further, they can be placed with a flapless technique and can be combined with any implant. A CDE programme was conducted by Department of Periodontology on the same topic on 14th September 2021 at the college auditorium. The event was attended by around 80 people, including UGs, PGs and staffs from various departments. An insight was given on the developing aspects of basal implantology along with various clinical case presentations.

Any defect of the face or associated structures may be congenital or acquired. Defects or deformities in the head and facial area may lead to functional and aesthetic disabilities. So the restoration of these defects play a vital role in function and cosmetic outcome. Different retention mechanisms are available, out of which implants have been evolved as the best method of retention with greater level of patient acceptability. Various implants used are the mini plates, mesh framework and reconstruction plates for trauma and fracture fixation. Use of conventional, basal and zygomatic implants for rehabilitation of edentulous spaces and use of temporomandibular joint replacement prosthesis for TMJ ankylosis. The meet aimed to highlight various implants used in OMFS. It was presented by final MDS students of our department.

Dr Sanjeev – spoke about the chin implants in augumenation of chin in patients.
Dr Amit-highlighted the use of titanium mesh framework in trauma cases.
