TITLE: SCULPTING THE PERIODONTAL TISSUES: A BOON TO DENTISTRY
DATE: 29.11.2021
PRESENTED BY: Dr Alina Pauly, Dr Sharika Gopinath, Dr Asha V, Dr Shanmugapriya P A, Dr G Poojitha Reddy and Dr Nimmi Janardhanan

The primary goal of periodontal therapy is the regeneration of periodontal supporting tissues that have been lost as a consequence of periodontitis. The complete and predictable restoration of the periodontium following trauma or infection remains a critical objective of periodontal therapy. Initially periodontal therapy concentrated on scaling and root planing. In time, periodontal therapy evolved to access flap operations and it further paved way for regeneration of soft and hard tissues using different form of regenerative materials and surgical techniques. In recent years, there is a paradigm shift from synthetic local drug delivery agents to natural products with antibiotic properties to contain periodontitis in the early stage, as prevention is always better than cure. We are hence employing local drug delivery agents sourced from natural products. These natural local drug deliveries have been used in patients in our department and are currently under trial awaiting long term results.

The aim of the session was to provide an insight into periodontal tissue regeneration and its potential to improve the treatment outcomes of all dental procedures.
