The Department of Orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics specializes in the correction of defects in the jaws and teeth through the use of various removable and fixed appliances. Treatment takes the form of pre-adjusted edgewise appliances, lingual appliances, ceramic braces, myofunctional appliances, clear aligners, surgical orthodontics and micro implant based orthodontics.

The Department has excellent facilities ranging from separate UG and PG clinics with computers connected to a central server. The department has an advanced digital imaging and treatment simulation system, a first, which enables planning of complex procedures.

The department is a center of excellence recognized for PhD course by Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences. A combination of classroom lectures and practical experience at the clinic provides students with excellent understanding of procedures. With research being an important goal of the department, all PG and PhD students undertake research projects. The department currently has around a 1000 on-going cases covering all aspects of the specialty.

It is the first orthodontic department in our state to acquire Dolphin Imaging Software for diagnosis. By creating individual computer terminals for P.G.’s the department works, without paper on diagnosis and treatment of patients. Apart from numerous national and international publications the staff has 9 patents out of which 4 have been applied for Registration. Royal college of Physicians and surgeons of Glasgow, UK, has awarded FDS RCPS (Glasg) to Prof. Emeritus, Dr. Edwin Devadoss and MFDS to HOD Prof. Dr. Rajkumar Alle, recognizing their contribution to Orthodontics.

Future plans are to make it a center for M.Ortho (Glasgow) examination and to conduct regular courses on lingual orthodontics.
