TOPIC – DEMYSTIFYING THE STOMATOGNATHIC SYSTEM-II
ABSTRACT
Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are a complex group of disorders involving the temporomandibular joint complex, and muscles and teeth. TMD affects up to 15% of adults, with a peak incidence at 20 to 40 years of age. The aetiology of temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) is multifactorial, whereas occlusal disharmony is one of the predisposing factors. Stability in the masticatory structures should be a routine treatment goal to help reduce risk factors associated with developing temporomandibular disorders. Establishing a stable relationship between the occlusal position of the teeth and the joint position is important for proper masticatory function throughout the patient’s lifetime. Treatment goals directed toward establishing stability in the masticatory structures should be a routine part of prosthodontic therapy. Achieving these goals will most likely reduce the patient’s risk factors for developing TMD.
