Emergency Orthodontic Care

Emergency Orthodontic Care – An Overview

There is a very rare possibility of any emergency occurring with respect to dental issues. Most of the dental issues do not get you into an emergency situation but yes sometimes, dental issues might lead to pain and irritation or discomfort.

Here is a run down some of these issues and how to deal with them.

Ligature issues – This issue arising when you use brackets. Fine wires or rubber bands are used to hold the brackets. At times the ligatures may become loose and stick to your lip. This could lead to irritation. Hence, when a ligature goes loose you may tighten it by bending it back with the help of a rubber attached on the back of pencils.

Mouth Sores – If you wear braces, getting mouth sores might just be a common possibility with you. This does lead to irritation, discomfort and mouth ulcers. At such times, mouth wash and warm salt water gargles do help out in suppressing the pain and discomfort.

Swallowing – If you by mistake swallow some piece related to your braces, when you are wearing braces then, its better to consult the doctor immediately. The symptoms include sneezing, coughing or wheezing.

Loose Brackets and more – If you wear braces, you usually are aware of these issues. These brackets tend to loosen up due to chewing or eating crunchy or hard foods. This can lead to problems like discomfort due to bracket sticking out. When such an issue occurs you can easily use a sterile tweezer to slide the bracket along the wire. Then you need to rotate it inorder to get it back to its usual position.

Wire Protruding – As mentioned before if a wire becomes loose, you can use a pencil with a rubber end to push the wire against the tooth so as to avoid the irritation it causes. In case it becomes unbearable contact your orthodontist immediately. If it is not causing any discomfort, better to leave it as it is until your next appointment with the doctor. Only in an exceptional case when you cannot reach an orthodontist and the discomfort is too bad, simply cut the protruding wire with sharp clippers. Do take care of not swallowing the piece of wire that gets snipped. To protect yourself from doing so you may fold the tissue paper around that area. Also apply some relief wax on the area.

Having said that, it is advisable to reach out to the orthodontist or the dentist when dental issues occur.

All About Halitosis and How To Deal With It

All About Halitosis and How To Deal With It

Halitosis is not occasional bad breadth that you get due to eating stuff like garlic or onions that are generally responsible for the same, but it is apparently the chronic condition of bad breath. Bad breath does make us feel really embarrassed obviously, but even more if we get to know this from our near or dear ones. Many people from kids, adults to, even couples suffer from these issues leading to intimacy problems in couples at times as well.

Here’s a run down some of the common reason behind Halitosis
Lack of dental care –Dental care involves brushing teeth two to three times a day, flossing and using mouthwash on a daily basis. Poor dental care results in plaque building, further leading to bad breadth and other dental issues.

Food, Braces and Dentures – Food particles like garlic, onion and other food with strong smell do top the list when it comes to bad breadth causing agents. More so, if you wear braces or dentures. After having food, a lot of particles are stuck behind inside the mouth, cavities and even on the surface of the tongue but more importantly within the braces, if they are not cleaned properly. As for dentures, lose fitting ones cause infections and sores. This generally leads to bad breadth experiences post lunch.

Dental Issues – Another major cause of Halitosis is dental problems like tooth decay and gum disease. Dental conditions like periodontal disease and gingivitis occur when the bacteria succeeds in saving itself from being rinsed away by hiding itself.

Dry Mouth – Dry mouth occurs when the mouth isn’t able to make enough saliva needed to wash out the bad breadth causing bacteria from the mouth. So, dry mouth could be a result of poor dental care as well as addictions like smoking and alcohol.

Health Conditions – Many of us might not be aware of the fact that bad breadth could also be a result of conditions that affect the throat, nasal passage or sinus. Furthermore, according to the American Dental Association diseases related to the kidney or liver could also result in bad breadth. Bad breadth is a common issue during pregnancy due to cravings and intake of different types of foods, hormonal changes, nausea and morning sickness.

Dealing with Halitosis – Obviously, to deal with Halitosis, you need to find out the root cause of the condition. Is it braces, a result of poor dental hygiene, bad breadth causing foods or anything else. Once, you know the cause, you can figure out the suitable treatment for the same.

In case the situation is grave and you sense some internal condition, then is it advisable to seek a dentist as soon as possible. Generally, if its an external condition proper dental routines can easily solve the problem. For issues related to braces, its good to visit an orthodontist and for children related bad breadth issues, a pediatrician. Quit smoking or drinking if you do and bad breadth is a result of it.

Having foods which are low on sugar or sugar products can help you deal with dry mouth issues. These days dry mouth issues can be resolved by prescribing artificial saliva as well. Bad breadth related issues due to medication can be dealt with only by consulting a good dental specialist.

Cavities In Indian Children – On the Rise

Cavities In Indian Children

As per survey reports across 5 cities of India, Cavities in Children in India is considerably higher than ever before. Pediatric Orthodontists though say that it is largely preventable with the right oral care and eating habits. These days parents find children around 5 -6 years of age complaining of tooth pain. This is mostly due to the condition called Cavities. As per statistics over 40% of the children between two and 11 years are most likely to have cavities with their baby teeth and over 20% between six and 11 years with permanent teeth.

CAUSES
Fast Foods – No, its not chocolates or candies but its junk food like burgers, pizzas and noodles. Foods with high sugar or starch contents make up of the acid producing bacterias that in turn start eating the outer surface of the tooth or enamel. Exposure to such attacks of bacteria leads to early decay as the tooth starts losing its minerals.
Hereditary – Not exactly hereditary because, its not by birth but by use of same tooth brush or use of the same spoon from mother to child usually. Repeated use of the same spoon or brush is like transporting decay causing bacteria to your child’s teeth.

PREVENTION
Avoid sugary candies, sweets and fast food like pizzas, burgers or noodles or atleast limit your child’s consumption of it.
Avoid excess consumption of starchy and foods loaded with refined carbohydrates like chips, pasta or bread.
Aerated drinks are loaded with phosphorous and carbonation besides high sugar content that has the ability to wear away your teeth.

LIFESTYLE
Its always great to work at grass root levels as the habits developed at this stage would carry on across a lifetime. Here are few tips on developing a habit of oral hygeine amongst your toddlers.
Brush teeth twice a day.
Gargle after eating and having milk
Visit the dentist at least once in six months
Limit snacks between meals
Avoid eating something post brushing at night

In a nutshell, inculcating oral hygiene and healthy lifestyle amongst your children is one way to dodge the cavity monster away from your kids.

INJECTIONS IN DENTISTRY – TECHNIQUES AND ADVANCES FOR REDUCING PAIN

Pain is an integral phenomenon with bodily ailments, but is rather synonymous to dental treatment. As obnoxious as it can get, physiological as well as psychological factors, both have a role to play in dealing with pain stimulus response. More than adults, children are bound to get highly anxious even hearing about a potential dental treatment. The most feared of the treatment process is the injection part and mind it, it is not just that the fear of it is limited to kids, even adults have a strong dislike for injections. The painful experience a patient undergoes during an injection procedure is usually two fold. Firstly, when the needle perforates the mucosa damaging the tissue and secondly when injecting the fluid increases the pressure. This issues needs to be dealt with keen interest only because it could act like a roadblock for effective treatment and service.

INJECTIONS IN DENTISTRY

Its a fact that as layman, people are not much concerned about the technical finesse of the dental treatment, but would surely give you brownie points for a pain free dental procedure, injection being the common cause of unpleasant experience amongst adults and children both. In children, it proves to be a barrier in treatment as the child needs to be relaxed during the procedure of providing anaesthesia and anxiety often tends to make the child uneasy, thus hampering the treatment.

Though, research is already going on in the area, a completely pain free and non invasive type of injections are yet to hit the market. Though, numerous techniques to ease the discomfort and pain caused by injections to a good extent if not great are already there. This includes use of warmed up anaesthetic solutions, prolonged injection time and more. Here is a run down some commonly used injection delivery systems for reducing injection pain/ discomfort.

COMPUTERIZED CONTROL LOCAL ANAESTHESIA DELIVERY METHOD ( CCLAD )
WAND- Developed long back in 1997, WAND is a CCLAD device that is used for delivery of local anaesthetic solution automatically at a static pressure. It is a highly effective and comfortable injection technique even for tissues like periodontal ligament and palate, that are highly resilient by nature. The WAND consists of three different components namely foot pedal, control unit and a disposable hand piece.  The hand piece is connected to the conventional anesthetic cartridge with plastic micro tubing and is a very light weight device that looks like a Pen. The computer control unit is used for controlling the delivery of local anaesthesia, while the rate of the injection can be controlled with the help of the foot pedal. The reason behind getting such good results with Wand is basically because of maintaining the ideal flow rate.

SINGLE TOOTH ANAESTHESIA SYSTEM (STA)
Introduced in 2007, the STA helps in identifying the ideal placement for needle alongside real time monitoring of the anaesthetic solution’s exit pressure. In case of any sort of leakage, be it from the cartridge/syringe or due to improper placement of the needle or insufficient pressure, the STA has a mechanism of sending an alert.  The STA system also regulates the LA Pressure, thus administering greater volume o f LA with ease and minimal damage to tissue.

COMFORT CONTROL SYRINGE (CCS)
Made from a base unit and syringe, CCS for specific applications comes with five different basic injection rate settings. These applications include Palatal region, IO, Infiltration, PDL and Block. The LA solution gradually increases its rate to a pre-programmed value after it is initially expressed at a very low rate. The increase starts post 10 seconds.

These techniques have shown variations in results, in terms of pain reduction, depending upon certain constrains like anxiety levels, age and more, but have proved less painful in many of the cases as well.
